The Indian National Congress was a group established in order to gain independence for India, although, the All-India Muslim League was skeptical of independence because they wanted to protect the Muslim minority in India. Gandhi was the leader of the Indian independence movement from 1919 to 1947. He used nonviolent methods in order to gain independence, such as civil disobedience. He wanted to make India ungovernable, so the British would be forced to hand over the government. Some examples of the methods he used were the Salt March and public fasting. Once the British handed over India to the Indian National Congress, the All-India Muslim League demanded a separate state, Pakistan.
