answers must be typed, double spaced, in Times New Roman font size 11 or 12. Use photographs you took at the museum, pictures on the Met’s website, and the “Form and Content” Powerpoint presentation to help you write.
You may draw on (not copy) the information on the Met’s wall labels, but that is all. You must always tell your reader, me, what information comes from the Met’s text and this should always be written in your own words – quotations are not allowed for this assignment. Do not use Wikipedia or any sources beyond the labels you see at the museum. Write ½ of a page to 1 page per answer. More thorough is better.
Find Triptych or Madonna and Child Enthroned by Master of the Magdalen (active 1265-95) in gallery 304 (first floor). Write a formal analysis of the central image and of one of the apron scenes (smaller images on the right and left sides). In what ways do we see symmetry, balance, and stylization in the composition? How are the central image and apron scene you chose related in terms of both form and content? Do you feel this altarpiece would have been powerful in a medieval church and why?
4. Find and Compare Titian’s Madonna and Child (1508, in gallery 626, on the second floor) with Il Grechetto’s Saint Francis in Ecstasy (1650, in gallery 601, second floor). How does Titian’s painting showcase Renaissance values of balance, tenderness and restraint? How does Il Grechetto’spiece contrast that with the dynamism and extreme emotion of the Baroque? Which artwork do you prefer and why?
5. Spend a little time with Auguste Rodin’s sculpture, The Burghers of Calais (modeled 1884-95, in gallery 548, second floor). What story does it illustrate? You can read this on the Met’s website and on the label at the museum. What different responses to the situation do we see and how? How does Rodin convey intense emotions like fear and desperation? Do you like this artwork? Why or why not?
