Create a visual aid about an interesting business or economic data and explain it in a one-page memo.
Examples of a business or economic data are:
Unemployment rate in US or CA or Los Angeles
Population statistics (US, or CA, or local)
Number of gun owners (US, or CA, or local)
Stock prices of any publicly traded company
Price of Big Mac or a can of Coca Cola for the past 10 years
The number of US currencies ($100 bills for example) in circulation
The above data points are only examples. You can use ANY “interesting business or economic data”. If you are unsure about the validity of the data point for this assignment, please check with me.
You must create an original (i.e. your own) visual aid in Excel and then copy and paste into your memo document. Do NOT use pre-made Google search images of visual aids. When you paste the visual aid into your memo use, Paste Special > Picture (Enhanced Metafile) option to paste a picture of the visual aid and not an embedded object. After pasting the visual aid, click on the image, then go to Format > Wrap Text > Tight to make the image floating. By doing this, you will have control over the placing the visual aid anywhere on your memo. The visual aid doesn’t need to be placed in the center of the memo.
To create a nice visual aid, consider including many data points. For example, showing the population of Glendale, CA for one year (one data point) is insufficient. Instead consider showing it over a 5 to 10 year period. Follow the guidelines and the requirements of an effective visual aid explained in the previous module. Your visual aid MUST have the following:
An identifier (e.g. Figure 1) which you must use in the body of your memo.
Title – A description of the visual aid is often placed in the plotted area to provide an explanation of the information in the visual aid.
Settings – The scale, axis increments, and baseline must be easily visible and appropriate for the graph.
Source – The source you found the information such as The Wall Street Journal, Wikipedia, U.S. Department of Energy, etc. Place the source(s) of the data below the visual aid and in a small font size, italicized.
The memo is from YOU to ME. The Subject Line is very important, similar to an email. Write your subject line AFTER you complete the visual aid and explain it in your memo. The subject line must capture the essence of what is being communicated with the memo.
One or two paragraphs in the memo should be sufficient. This is not a long document (only ONE page) and should not detail EVERY piece of the data captured in the visual aid. Just write about what the visual aid is about and its significance.
