Final Paper Assignment
What has changed in the aftermath of colonialism? How have things become different? What
happens when colonizers no longer want to play the game of imperial colonialism? What
happens when those meant to implement colonial rule become its very resistors?
For your final paper, you will assess the impact of colonialism and its aftermaths, by examining
Waiting for the Barbarians and drawing on the thinkers we have considered (from either Unit 2
or Unit 3) to help you along the way. So, consider the legacy of colonialism and the response to
it, within Coetzee’s novel, and build an argument that uses the ideas from either feminist &
gender criticism or post-colonial critique (from the chapters in the Heart of Darkness textbook)
to help you develop your own unique argument on the novel. Position yourself as either a
feminist or a post-colonialist, and think through how the various characters in the novel—the
magistrate, the native girl, Colonel Joll, or others, help us to see what the lasting impact of
colonialism is on a country that was previously colonized.
Write a 3-page paper in Times New Roman 12-point font with one-inch margins and proper
MLA formatting. Please review “anatomy of an argumentative paper” as well, to help you in
framing out the bones of the paper. You may use limited research (finding scholarly articles on
Coetzee’s novel Waiting for the Barbarians) if you wish—it is optional here—but you must cite
those sources and include a Works Cited page.
