Part 2: Reading can be overwhelming when ideas come at you quickly and in a style of prose that is confusing. You will spend a good deal of time in university deconstructing prose. To assist you, we will work on a basic deconstruction of the main components of academic writing. Most academic writing—professional and student—consists of four main components. 1. The general topic and focus. 2. The specific problem or issue being investigated and possibly the importance of that problem or issue. 3. The author’s assessment of or solution for the problem or issue (thesis, sometimes comes at the beginning but sometimes not until the end.) 4. The main arguments supporting the solution.
Your job for this assignment is to read the assigned article and identify all four levels. Levels 1-3 should take approximately 75-100 words. You may present these components as a list. Level 4 will need approximately 500 words. For this component, we want you to locate two of the most compelling arguments and show how they support the author’s thesis. What is the author’s central point and how do they “prove” it? Note: For this exercise, you do not need to assess the veracity of the argument. You just need to find the two strongest supporting arguments. This section should be presented in proper academic prose, with MLA in-text citation as shown in the sample. If you can identify Levels 1-4 in everything you read, you will read more effectively and perform better at test time. If you also apply this formula to your writing, you will produce a wellorganized argument.
