Assignment Instructions
General Requirements:
Use of APA Format 3-5 typed pages in length (not including title and reference page)
Double spaced
One inch margins
12 point font
Free of mechanical and grammatical errors
Specific Requirements:
SELECT: Group interaction provides the foundation for many television programs. These groups include work groups, problem solving groups, social groups, and family groups. You should select a current (within the last 10 years) television program whose story line is formed around a group. Choose one episode of the program and do an analysis and identify external factors that influenced the group of characters.
Some guidelines for selecting the television program include:
the group should be an integral part of the program
the group should have an ongoing pattern of interaction
the program should be one with which you are familiar, so you know the typical patterns of behaviors of the group members.
Some suggestions for programs include:
CSI (any version)
Criminal Minds
Blue Bloods
The Office
Modern Family
Last Man Standing
The Big Bang Theory
Grey’s Anatomy
Parks and Recreation
This Is Us
You are not limited to this list above or required to use one. These titles are to give you examples and ideas. Do keep in mind part of the assignment is in the selection of the program in regard to how well it fits the criteria of the group being an integral part of the program, group members having an ongoing pattern of interaction and the program being one with which you are familiar. Any program is acceptable, if it meets the criteria.
VIEW: Once you have selected the program to analyze, watch one episode of the program for the purpose of analysis of how the group functions. ANALYZE: After viewing the episode, develop an analysis of the group interaction by responding to and addressing the following prompts. Write in well developed paragraphs with transitions between ideas. Proofread and edit your writing carefully.
Include in your analysis:
Part 1: Provide a brief explanation/summary of the program and the episode selected. Note: You MAY find and use summary information concerning the program and the episode from an outside source. Since summarizing the program is not the objective of the assignment, using existing summary information is certainly acceptable as long as the source is given. This section should be approximately 125 words (half a page.)
Part 2: Using what you have learned in your reading and other assignment resources, identify and explain the factors that influenced the group of characters in this specific episode. Support your response with specific examples. This section should be minimum 2 ½ to 3 pages.
Identify the type of group represented by this group in the video. Explain why these characters are interacting and what is their goal? Provide specific examples of characteristics of the group that make you identify the group as a particular type.
Use the bona fide group perspective to identify what made the interaction effective or ineffective. How did any structure factors impact the group? How did any issues of time and space impact the group?
How did any influence of diversity impact the group?
How did any influence of technology impact the group?
How did the group exhibit a shared identity and reach any common goal(s)?
Identify any positive synergy or social loafing that was exhibited.
