READ THE LAB FOR PREFERENCE THE QUESTIONS ARE ON PAGE 2 PRE-LAB EXERCISE: I HAVE POSTED THEM DOWN BELOW SO IT’S EASIER FOR YOU those are the questions for each experiment and for each one just
write your null hypothesis and sketch a graph of the data that you would expect to get that would SUPPORT your null hypothesis (what is your dependent and independent variable?)
The graph can be anything don’t worry just do a good null hypothesis and dependent and independent variable just couple sentences for each one nothing crazy
In the space below, for each experiment,
write your null hypothesis and sketch a graph of the data that you would expect to get that would SUPPORT your null hypothesis (what is your dependent and independent variable?)
Your overall claim is: Ants compete for food resources. To provide evidence for this claim you will do a set of 3 experiments.
Experiment 1: you will establish that ants have food preferences. Is your question -do specific species of ants prefer one food type over another? state the (write your null hypothesis and sketch a graph of the data that you would expect to get that would SUPPORT your null hypothesis (what is your dependent and independent variable?)
Experiment 2: Once you have established preference, you will determine if ants partition resources. Recall, that when closely related species consume different foods, this can be an indication that the species are partitioning this limited resource to avoid competition. Your question for this experiment is– do ants partition food resources
(state the (write your null hypothesis and sketch a graph of the data that you would expect to get that would SUPPORT your null hypothesis (what is your dependent and independent variable?)
Experiment 3: Finally, demonstrating niche shifts can further provide evidence that species are competing. A species niche is the range of resources and conditions that a species can utilize or tolerate. If a species shifts its niche as a result of competition, that is, that it uses a different set of resources in the presence of other species, this niche is referred to as a realized niche and provides evidence that a species is being affected by competition. Your question for this experiment is – do ants shift their niche in response to competition
