Alcohol and tobacco are substances that are unique because they are
considered legal substances for adults yet are among the most lethal and
addictive abused substances. Because these substances are readily available,
albeit illegal for those individuals’ underage, early use and abuse can have a
significant influence on adolescent behaviors.
Alcohol abuse and smoking typically start in adolescence, when youth are
most vulnerable to substance abuse because of peer pressure, identity
development, and even experimentation. Unfortunately, the physical side effects
of addiction to these substances become most damaging when abuse begins in
adolescence and continues into adulthood.
Smoking is also a concern for adolescents because it often precedes
other substance abuse such as drinking alcohol. Research has found that risky
behavior is higher among adolescent smokers than their peers, with more
aggressive behaviors, marijuana use, binge drinking, and multiple sexual
partners. you will examine alcohol and tobacco abuse during adolescence.
